10 of the best candles that (really) smell like Christmas trees.
Scented candles that bring all the festive vibes.
Years ago, my cousin gave me a beautiful coffee table book, New York Christmas, that comes out as soon as I start feeling the festive itch.
But for the serious purposes of research for this edition (as I told Will, whenever he walked into another room smelling of our local garden centre from mid-November onwards), things have taken a festive turn here earlier this year.
Even if you’re not ready to deck the halls quite yet, a candle that captures the smell of a freshly cut fir tree or garland will set the mood for the holidays ahead. And now the Christmas light switch-ons have started happening—London’s West End is already sparkling, and it’s Covent Garden’s turn today—I thought we’d dive in!

Diptyque’s Sapin Classic Candle With Golden Lid
A festive thing of beauty, quite frankly. As featured as a part of a mini trio in 10 of the best holiday gift sets for midlife beauty, the classic Sapin (pine) is deserving of a full size, or, if had to pick one of Diptyque’s Christmas limited editions, it would be this one. There’s a reason why this extraordinary fragrance becomes a fast sellout (I noticed stocks dwindling in my local John Lewis a week ago).
This perfectly captures the depth and different facets of pine—even as the needles start to dry out a little (as well as Siberian pine, resin and cedar are also in the mix). This year’s gorgeous green holder with limited edition gold lettered felt label (designed by Lucy Sparrow) makes it all the more stunning.
Jo Malone London’s Pine & Eucalyptus
Top marks to the Jo Malone London design team for festive packaging this year—how adorable is that glossy green bow atop the golden lid? What I love about this one is the freshness that comes through from the eucalyptus, complimenting the classic pine scent. It’s still super-Christmassy, but has a vibrant, lighter edge.
Melrose Candle Company’s Evergreen
This small, independent Scottish candle maker in Edinburgh is close to my heart—my daughter and I are big fans, and make a beeline for it whenever we visit the city (strong recommend!). You can shop online via the website, and there are great bundle offers, on multiple purchases (including minis), across all their festive scented candles.
Evergreen is a true, potent Christmas tree scent, with pine and eucalyptus, in a 100% natural, vegan and pet-friendly wax.
